Travelling has taken me to places of extreme poverty. I have witnessed impoverished peoples who are underfed and unable to access medical help; children working to support their families; slums and shanty towns. I’ve always felt as a travel writer promoting tourism, I have some responsibility to inform tourists of these issues. I’ve found guidebook publishers are not only impressed with in-depth knowledge of local issues, but quite often demand it. Less space is available for these concerns in holiday sections of travel magazines and newspaper print. But in this case, I have tried to pitch features to other genres; travel writing is not limited to hotel reviews! Researching local issues immerses the writer in communities and culture, which I’ve found enables writing to stand out from superficial pieces. Helping out with local environment or conservation projects, for example, earns you trust and respect and stories you may not have encountered otherwise – keep every contact you make, they could be useful for future features. For me, good travel journalism subtly shifts from the holiday pleasures consumers expect, to integrate social and political dimensions, multifaceted cultural practices and colour.’
